# 23 Summary of the 23 Things

Well, I did it! I have completed the 23 things. I have experienced new technology that I had not be exposed to before. I would have never known about this technology had it not been for the 23 Things offered through our library system. Thank you to all of the individuals who have had a hand in putting it all together. I enjoy some well most of the 23 things. I would like to continue to use Flickr, YouTube, and Overdrive. I may even set up a blog for private use. There is only so much time in a day for computer work, knitting, and genealogy. Genealogy could be an all day thing itself. I would love to be able to knit ALL day, oh the projects I could complete. Life moves on and time does not slow down for anyone or anything. The technologies may be able to assist in making life easier but takes time to set up and maintain. Learning new things whether technology or something about yourself is always a challenge. I believe learning should never stop of anyone.

# 22 e-books

What a neat thing. This would be so easy to download e-books. It is just a matter of spending time to search for a title and download onto a device. This is so portable take it to the beach, airplane, passenger in the back seat. I would even listen to an e-book while knitting. It is wonderful that companies out there in cyber space offer such a product. Technology has surely advanced over the years. I just wonder what new technology will be around in say 10 years or even 5 years from now.

# 21 Podcasting

Where is the picture? I have never been one to like radio talk shows. This podcasting falls right in there for radio talk show. Although the knitting podcasts are not interesting to me without the video, I need pictures. I tried genealogy podcast and it seems that it holds my interest more than the knitting did. I guess videos and pictures are not necessary with genealogy. It is interesting to hear about others and their adventures. It is kinda like a telephone call instead of face to face, when you don't know what to look at when things get boring or don't relate to anything. I noticed that the podcasting does not tell you how long it is. I don't know whether I will be listening for 2 minutes or 25 minutes. It does not matter but I keep wondering if the topic or cast will get any better or how much longer kinda thing.

# 20 Discover YouTube

YouTube has everything, well almost everything. I was fascinated by the number of knitting videos on there. The link will or should show you continental knitting, something I will try tonight. I hope this link works http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuRLFl36tDY
It worked for me, yeah. This will be a challenging way to knit.

# 19 Explore Web 2.0 award winners

The internet is such a remarkable tool. I explored Craigslist. It has many different directions that you could go and explore. It seems to be a great way to sell or research something that you my consider purchasing or selling. I was surprised to see the forums for discussions. So much variety and something for everyone.

# 18 online productivity

Alright, another user name and password, another, okay...I liked the google doc, or should I say I only logged in and looked the google docs. Very interesting to be able to have such a powerful tool so close even when on vacation or on business. I wonder though, are we getting to dependent on computers to have such ease of access and portability? We are becoming so trusting of computers that could decide not to work at any given moment. Hum...that is a thought!

# 17 Learning 2.0 Sandbox wiki

So I clicked on something, named something "rather be knitting". I then look for my page of "rather be knitting" and not my blog by that same name, but just the page and did not find it anywhere. I found in comments that I was currently logged into Marylandlibrariessandbox so I added a comment about playing in the sand on the beach and sandbox in general. I have not added my blog to the favorites list. Well I think that is what it said to do but was unsuccessful. Onto #18...

# 16 wikis

Wikis are neat but sometimes hard to let go of the control in which anyone can edit the wiki. If you are knowledgable of a subject and wish to gather other opinions or information a wiki is great. I would probably not use a wiki. I would read them and take the information with a grain of salt.

# 15 Perspectives on Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and the Future

Libraries in the future... it makes me wonderful about our future, will our society use the library, will they physical go to the library or will the library be at our fingertips from our home or office. Library 2.0 to me wants to share information for each and every library, whether public, scholar, or business, into one huge pot. The ability to share all such information with anyone, anywhere at the touch of the keyboard sounds possible. OR will our society have to physical go to the library, will the internet just go down and the ability for humans to maintain it still be possible? What if sooo much information is in cyberspace that some day it just says "Nope not going to work anymore, sorry!" The age of technology, computers, and the internet could be gone forever. We may, hopefully not, someday have to go back to card catalogs. That is an awful thought, but could it happen, one never knows. In our day and time with terrorist and the weather you never know what could really happen in our future.

# 14 Technorati

What a way to find absolutely anything on the internet. By using tags to assist others in finding your blog is a quick and efficient way to narrow down the blogs you have to go through. I searched several tags and was amazed at how many blogs on the subjects there were. The quickness of locating the thousands of subject is wonderful. Technorati sure has their hands full in keeping up with technology.

# 13 Del.icio.us

Interesting tool that I would not use but it is good to know about. The link to the tutorial that was highly recommended did not work.

#12 Rollyo

Another account, another password, no thank you. Again it is fun to play and experience the website and learn about it but I would not like to have to remember yet another password, another site, another account. Computers are a wonderful tool to use but to have so many accounts. I will stick with knitting.

#11 LibraryThing and catalog

It is neat to play with and learn about the different things on the internet. I however have choosen to not add another sign in on another website that I will probably not revisit. It is good to know that they are out there but for me to sit and play with them online, I'd rather be knitting...

#10 Online image generator

One could spend an awful amount of time playing with the different generators that are online. I found out that my pirate name is Glitter Girl. Although that does not sound so pirate to me I guess it "matches" my personality? Okay onto #11

#9 Useful library related blogs and/or news feeds

Okay back to the 23 things...#9 I created a news feed on my bloglines. It will be quick and easy to pick up the latest news of what is going on around the county and state. I looked for a feed on Weather.com but did not find one. I really don't listen to the news at home anymore due to it being the same every evening, who shoot who and for what? I would rather be knitting or enjoying my family instead of watching tv. I will skim the headlines online and be done with the rest of the news. I have looked at other public library websites but could not see a feed/link to add to my bloglines. All is interesting to learn about.

Time to make time for Learning 2.0

I have been busy doing some traveling and knitting. I will post a picture of my latest creation soon. My computer has been ill for the last week and I just got it back today, 7/18/07. I always thought that working on a laptop would be cool. My experience has enabled me to find that using a laptop after all is NOT as cool as I thought it would be. I really missed the number keys on the right side of the keyboard and even my mouse at times. Hopefully, back to learning 2.0 tomorrow...

# 8 RSS feeds

Well, I have worked through the RSS feeds and have subscribed to 10 different blog lines. This is very nice to be able to look at the ones that I am interested in all at once rather than having to click and close windows constantly. I will be able to quickly scan the ones that have been updated and one click will get me there. This will enable me to use my time more effectively.

Thing # 7 Anything technology related

Well, I elaborated quite a bit on the other post earlier today. Technology does make it easier to share photos, stay in contact with family members in other states/countries. I wonder what would happen if we did not have the technology that we use and rely on everyday ever again? We would have to go back to snail mail for communicating with family. It would take weeks to get a response or to hear about family news. Pictures would be in boxes in a cluttered closet at home. Telephone communication would have to be the hurry up and get home so you don't miss a call. I rely on my cell phone to help me remember what I am to do on what day. My appointments or just reminders are so easy to keep on the cell phone and keeps me organized. The cell phone is portable, always with me, most of the time charged. Technology is wonderful and continously changing.

Missed thing 2 again

Well I could not find how to edit the post after it is posted. So I started a new post and will investigate how to delete the first post.

Habit #2 - Accept responsibility for your own learning - I believe that whole heartedly. Learning new things, even the most little bit of information will build and helps to boarden your mind. Learning something totally new can be exciting but also frightening. Expanding yourself opens your world to new and more colorfully people that you may meet along the journey. Time constraints could bar you from learning something new. You can take an old hobby to expand on. I like to knit but crocheting would be something new and different. I can crochet a chain and turn and crochet back but the different patterns are something I would like to learn more of. Maybe someday I will make a crochet project but right now my knitting projects are in full swing. Genealogy is another hobby that I learn how to expand my family tree. I am continuously having to figure out what direction to go forward on a family member until I "hit a brick wall". Even my ancestors are pushing me to learn more everyday.

Habit 6 - Use technology to your advantage - I like using technology in my everday world. I use a digital camera often. I take pictures of nature, cemeteries, family members. I even have my husband photo documenting the restoration of a 1968 Chevelle. Digital cameras are wonderful for many uses. I have several thumb drives/flash drives. I backup files for my genealogy and pictures. I use a cell phone everyday keeping in touch with family and friends. The internet is a must for me with doing genealogy searches, checking e-mail, or looking at web cams in Ocean City Maryland. I am able to connect with distant family members in other states. I have a scanner that is a must for copying old photos or documents into the computer to preserve them. I would really like to have a portable scanner to have when I visit older family members to copy their photos into my computer rather than having to go and scan them at the nearest WalMart. Nothing is every easy it is just how you go around it to meet your needs.

Missed thing 2

stepping back and looking over

I decided that I would look back over the 23 things and read closer to what it is exactly that I am to be doing after taking a few days break from Learning 2.0. I am working on thing #7 so far according to my 23 thing tracking log. I want to be through in doing each thing completely. I will work on this and hopefully post again later today.

# 6 Flickr and Mashups

These tools look like fun to be able to work with. It would bring out the creativity in me if I dedicated time to playing with it.

day 3 of 23 things

Well, Flickr is a great tool. After trying to upload several photos to Flickr and realizing that my files were too large I was a bit disappointed. Now I have to take time to resize my files so that I will be able to upload them. Okay now more time fixing something before I can follow through with uploading. I think I am not in a good mood today! The heat is getting to me.

# 5 2nd day of 23 things

Morning, I am at it again with reading and having "fun" exploring the 23 things. I am thinking of photos that have been stored on my hard drive for years and want to share them with family members that live out of state by using Flickr. Granted the photos are older but it seems like the older the better. I look forward to spending more time on the computer uploading pictures for family to view. I managed to finish a knitted dishcloth that I started last week last night. I have started a bath mat using 4 strands of cotton. The bath mat is about 1/4 of the way done. I need to take pictures of the projects that I have finished. Maybe tonight I could do that! Why does it seem that there is not enough time in a day! I need to retire soon.

# 1 first try

Good afternoon,

This is my first attempt in setting up my blog. We shall see how it goes.
